Thierry Boutsen was one of the more reluctant starters in the 1989 Australian Grand Prix. As continual rain drenched the track: flooding it in various places, the mild-mannered Belgian led a delegation of drivers who tried to persuade the clerk of the course Tim Schenken, to postpone the start beyond the original delay as everyone waited in vain for the downpour to ease. Satoru Nakajima came in fourth place.
